Kicking
off the event were some bigger announcements from companies, including
Nvidia, LG, Sony, and Samsung. Those live streams have ended, but you can
watch most of their archives and catch up right here. And
with the event still ongoing, and the show floor open, here’s how you can follow along
with our team’s coverage.
Let’s have a look at some of the most innovative inventions
showcased at the CES event 2024, in Oslo.
Transparent TVs by LG:
The
magic of LG's Signature OLED T was
easily seen as it seamlessly transitioned between transparency and vivid
display amid great thrill and excitement. This year, LG's promise to
commercialize the 77-inch wonder is a bold step towards redefining the
aesthetic of living spaces. It's a statement of elegant functionality and
serves as a window to a world where technology and design converge in harmony.
Its inclusion on my list is due to its visionary approach to home
entertainment.
Televisions aren’t naturally pretty or used as a design
feature, but LG Electronics is out to change that perception. Today, the consumer
technology giant unveiled what its touts as “the world’s first” wireless
transparent OLED TV. The LG Signature OLED T combines
a transparent 4K OLED screen with LG’s wireless video and audio transmission
technology.
Companionship – Introducing Wehead:
At
this year's CES, a notable innovation was introduced by an American startup: Wehead. This
groundbreaking AI companion robot presents a human-like face on a screen,
forging a new frontier in digital interaction. My experience with Wehead was
remarkable, engaging in conversation with an AI that seemed almost human. The
developers designed it with a noble purpose: to offer companionship to those
who might feel isolated or lonely.
Reflecting
on George Ritzer's analysis in 'The McDonaldization of Society', Wehead stands in
stark contrast to the impersonal automation that has come to define modern
services, like those of fast-food chains, which expedite efficiency at the cost
of human interaction.
Wehead aims to restore some of that lost connection, providing a 'face' and a 'voice' in scenarios where human contact is scarce. It's a poignant response to the social isolation prevalent in our fast-paced world and represents a meaningful use of technology to enhance human connection.
This is why Wehead has earned a place on my list – it's not just about the technology itself, but about how it can serve to alleviate the loneliness that touches so many lives.
Hyundai
shows off its eVTOL, air taxi ambitions
Supernal’s electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft got a showcase from its parent company Hyundai Motor Group on the ground in Las Vegas, as the so-named S-A2 moves closer to its planned 2028 launch for shuttling passengers. Head here for a full rundown on the aircraft, and the challenges in expanding airborne mobility.
Samsung
brings back Ballie; renews green initiative
Meet the new and improved Ballie, Samsung Electronics
home robot, which it previewed today. It’s around the size of a bowling ball
with a battery designed to last two to three hours. Ballie sports a spatial
lidar sensor to help it navigate rooms and obstacles, as well as a 1080p
projector with two lenses that allow the robot to project movies and video
calls and even act as a second PC monitor.
Expanding beyond cute, rolling robots, Samsung showcased its wider initiatives for connected homes. Aside from expected UI and feature updates for its existing SmartThings home automation platform, Samsung showed off a “map view” for users that creates an interactive home map that even includes animated avatars of residents and pets.
Also, Samsung
devoted some of its keynote speech to its commitment to sustainability.
“We start by incorporating recycled materials into some of our most loved
products, such as recycled fishing nets in our Galaxy,” said Inhee Chung, VP of
corporate sustainability at Samsung. “Smartphones, recycled plastic in our TVs,
and recycled aluminum in our bespoke refrigerators. Recycled plastic accounted
for 14% of the total plastic used in our products in 2022. And we’re working
towards increasing this amount.”
Talking, color-changing BMW:
“Automaker BMW unveiled a
pair of concept cars under the name BMW I Vision Dee during its CES 2023 event. The cars interact
with drivers through color-changing panels and a front display that creates
something like facial expressions.”
Remember KITT, the
talking car from Knight Rider? It's getting closer to reality, a talking,
color-changing BMW concept car displayed at CES. It will listen and respond to
commands from curbside, as well as remotely via a smartphone app. Plus, the
concept's exterior skin is covered with new full-color E Ink technology that
can instantly shift between up to 32
colors, allowing you to generate patterns and multicolor schemes on the fly to
customize your ride.
As the curtains draw on this exhilarating technical
extravaganza, we find ourselves immersed in a tapestry of innovation and
collaboration. The resonance of insightful discussions, hands-on workshops, and
cutting-edge presentations still lingers in the air, echoing the spirit of
progress and exploration. The connections forged, the knowledge shared, and the
solutions unveiled during this event have undoubtedly paved the way for a
future where technology catalyzes transformative change.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable gathering of minds, we carry with us not just the memories of a successful event but the collective inspiration to push the boundaries of what's possible in the ever-evolving landscape of technology. Until we reconvene in the next chapter of discovery, let the sparks ignited here continue to illuminate our path toward a brighter, tech-driven future.
